Il Becco: visual identity

design / art direction

On the cusp of summer 2025, the historic kiosk in Katajanokka came to life again with the opening of Il Becco, an Italian-style café.

The visual identity was created as a pro bono project, featuring a beaked animal inspired by the client’s own sketch (becco = beak). Gelato, pinsa, and wine – buon appetito!

The logo’s form draws on the traditions of Italian typography, while the subtext highlights its local roots and the kiosk’s location.

The typography draws from both Italian design language and local identity: the headline font’s strong contrasts and vintage character reflect the area’s history.

For body text, a clean and understated grotesque typeface by the Italian design collective Collletttivo anchors the visual identity firmly in the present day.

The kiosk also gained a beaked animal as its mascot, based on the client’s sketch, which was simplified and refined.

The mascot “speaks” to customers – in Italian, of course – adding personality and playfulness to the overall concept.

Nicola Dal Zovo, owner of Il Becco

“Working with Toni has been a pleasure due to the professionalism and competence he displayed throughout the collaboration.

He took initiative to execute the job and made sure that the final outcome would be of excellent quality.”
